T

he Jakarta Police narcotics directorate said on Monday that the drug abuse case files for the suspects of last week’s horrific car crash in Gambir, Central Jakarta, are near completion and will be handed over to prosecutors this week.

“We’ve encountered no problems [in compiling the case files]. All four testimonies have been consistent throughout several questioning sessions and there were no conflicting statements,” directorate chief Sr. Comr. Nugroho Aji told reporters.

The suspects in the case, comprising driver Apriyani Susanti and passengers Denny Mulyana, Arisandi and Adestina Putri, have been charged under the 2009 Narcotics Law for illegal drug possession and drug abuse.

A blood test conducted by the National Drugs Agency on Monday last week found traces of methamphetamine and MDMA, popularly known as ecstasy, in the suspects’ blood samples. Their urine samples also tested positive for meth.

Nugroho said the police would take all four suspects to the Drug Dependence Hospital (RSKO) in Cibubur, East Jakarta, to check whether they were only occasional drug users or were addicts.

According to him, police psychologists will also check their mental health to see if there are any disorders.

“So far, we have found no evidence of mental problems, as all the suspects gave logical answers during questioning. However, we want expert opinions on this matter,” he said.

Nugroho added that the psychological tests would be handled by the city police human resources bureau.

The police will also conduct a reconstruction prior to submitting the case files to prosecutors. “We will reconstruct their trip, including when they bought and downed the ecstasy pills,” Nugroho said.

The four suspects had confessed that they bought two ecstasy pills at a nightclub on Jl. Hayam Wuruk, Central Jakarta, the night before the crash. Each of them downed half a pill. They had also drunk whisky at a bar in Kemang, South Jakarta.

All four may face up to 12 years in prison and up to Rp 8 billion (US$896,000) in fines if found guilty.

Apriyani has also been charged under the 2009 Traffic and Transportation Law for reckless driving causing death, speeding, and driving without a valid license or registration. She may face up to six years in prison if found guilty.

City traffic police chief Sr. Comr. Dwi Sigit Nurmantyas said the police are still awaiting the results of police forensic laboratory tests to complete the suspects’ case files. (mim)
