ocial Affairs Minister Saifullah “Gus Ipul” Yusuf said his ministry respected the decisions of students and their parents who chose to cancel their enrollment at Sekolah Rakyat.
“During the recruitment process they were willing to enroll at Sekolah Rakyat but when school was about to start, they said they were unwilling,” he told a press conference at his office on Thursday, as quoted by kompas.com.
“We respect it because we cannot force them.”
He added that the number of students resigning was a very small number of the total students at the Sekolah Rakyat program, only 115 out of 9,705 students, or 1.4 percent.
He said that all of the resigning students had been replaced by other eligible candidates.
The reasons for resigning from enrollment vary, with some opting for regular schools, some feeling unable to stand dormitory life or missing their families and some opting to take care of their parents at home.
Jawa and Sulawesi contributed the greatest number of resigning students at 35 each, followed by 26 from Sumatra, 10 from Kalimantan, five from Maluku and four from Bali and Nusa Tenggara.
