AKARTA: Former National Police (Polri) chief Gen. (ret.) Dibyo Widodo passed away on Thursday in Singapore at 11:15 a.m. local time (10:15 a.m. Jakarta time) after suffering a heart attack, chief spokesman Insp. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution said at his office on Thursday.
“He died from illness at Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore. We have lost a role model,” Saud said.
Dibyo was 66. He was born in Purwokerto, Central Java, on May 26, 1946. He served as the Jakarta Police chief before he became the 13th National Police chief, serving from 1996–1998.
Saud described Dibyo as “a person of strict morality”.
“When he served as Jakarta Police chief, he came directly to crime scenes in person. He was not a leader who led from behind a desk,” he said.
The chief spokesman also said that Dibyo’s leadership style — leading from the frontline — should be adopted by chiefs in all police units. Dibyo often awarded his officers when they performed well, but would also sanction those who violated regulations.
