Time well spent in making the most of Bandung for browsing, bites and bargains

I

first visited Bandung in 1989, lured by its description as one of the prettiest cities in Indonesia and, of course, that romantic title of the “Paris of Java”. On a university student’s budget, I stayed at tiny lodgings off Jl. Asia-Afrika, taking in its historic sights by day (the Asia-Afrika conference museum, the legacies of its “tropical” Art Deco heyday) and strolling along quaintly colonial Jl. Braga at night.

It was a laid-back and relaxing interlude. What a difference 20 years and the construction of a toll road make in the development of the city! Today, Bandung is a trendy, funky and happening escape for Jakartans wanting to get away from their crowded capital. Famous for its cool climate, it is the coolest and most convenient escape from reaching boiling point in Jakarta.

“I think it has a younger, more indie vibe than Jakarta,” says “Della”, a communications sector worker, about her enjoyment of trips to the West Java capital.

Food and shopping top her list of things to do: add to that excellent hotel options, ranging from five-star hotels with a nod to tradition or new, budget-friendly but no less polished accommodation for travelers, from those in the heart of the buzzing city center or up in the surrounding hills.

And while Bandung’s popularity bring their own urban problems to overcome, we flock there all the same, whether on holidays or to bring in the New Year.

Even if you are only having a brief encounter with the city, here is a selection of things to do, compiled by Natasha Ishak from The Jakarta Post’s Speak! magazine.

Lunch at Butch ‘n Burp
Jl. Ir. H. Djuanda no. 92

Most cafés in Bandung feature beautiful designs, but no café does retro better than Butch ‘n Burp. You know you’ve arrived at the restaurant once you see a red Volkswagen Kombi in Jl. Djuanda. The charming décor aside, this restaurant offers a delicious range of classic Western food, including a not-to-be-missed fish and chips. Butch ‘n Burp is a great place to hang out and chill with friends.

Shop at UNKL347
Jl. Trunojoyo no. 4

Bandung is famous for its “distro”, the inviting and interesting boutiques owned by local musicians. They sell clothes and accessories as a way to fund their music. Among the hundreds of Bandung distros, UNKL347 has to be one of the most popular pit stops. Apart from the cutting-edge and unique wardrobe offerings, this distro also sells a range of quirky furniture. The coolest thing is that it gives every customer a free plastic-watch bracelet worth Rp 10,000.

Afternoon snack at DenHaag Klappertaart
Jl. RE Martadinata no. 22

Squeeze in a little snack time before you continue on your shopping spree with the famous coconut dessert originating in Manado. Sure, other shops also sell klappertaart, but I was told that the one offered here is the best. Pick from a variety of flavors including raisin, almond and cheese. FYI, my personal obsession is the mixed almond-and-raisin version.

Shop at Lily & Rose
Jl. Riau no. 57

Whether you’re a casual chic chick looking for a nice sweater, or a girly diva searching for a summer dress, Lily & Rose has everything for everyone. But I’d be careful of this shop if I were you; I ended up spending way too much time (and money!) buying bags, accessories, shoes and gorgeous clothes.

Browse for antiques at Old & New
Jl. RE Martadinata no. 85

More adventurous shoppers can try their luck bargain hunting in this one-of-a-kind thrift store. This two-story shop offers unique finds such as old books, vintage telephones and period furniture. You’ll definitely find something here to personalize your bedroom!

Dinner at Karnivor Restaurant
Jl. Riau no. 127

Unleash your inner beast and enjoy a variety of meat dishes at Karnivor Restaurant. The unusually themed eatery – the décor is a mix of safari and pre-historic ornaments – is interesting, but it’s the food that really commands attention. Try their delicious Bamboo Afrika (Rp 17,000) and you’ll understand why. A plate of T-Rex Bone (Rp 59,000) and a glass of Gorilla Punch (Rp 20,000) were more than enough to make me ahappy camper.
