omputer distributor PT Synnex Metrodata Indonesia (SMI) says it wants to beat industry estimates by expanding its product and service portfolios to include smartphones and tablet computers.
Synnex, a subsidiary of PT Metrodata Electronics (MTDL), contributed Rp 3.7 trillion (US$381.1 million), or 72.1 percent, of its parent’s 5.1 trillion in revenue in 2012.
MTDL has reported annual revenue growth of 17.3 percent for 2012, while gross profits rose 24.7 percent to Rp 427.6 billion and its comprehensive income for the year soared 109.5 percent to Rp 129.5 billion.
Agus Honggo Widodo, the president director of SMI and a MTDL director, said that the company had a more ambitious growth target for 2013 than the 15 or 20 percent growth expected by the information technology (IT) industry. “We aim to grow far beyond that by recording a 20 to 25 percent increase in business.”
SMI, a major distributor of Dell and Lenovo personal computers (PC), also distributes software such as Microsoft products and enterprise solutions.
Agus said that the firm’s IT growth might top 30 percent taking into smartphones and tablets, noting that SMI’s consumer unit, which distributes personal computers, printers and software, comprised 55 percent of the firm’s revenue, with the remainder going to its commercial business unit, which provides network and storage solutions and enterprise-level computers to large companies and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
“This year, we expect the consumer unit to contribute roughly 60 percent to SMI’s revenue,” Agus said.
He added that the greater contribution of the consumer unit came hand-in-hand with a robust consumer IT segment.
The International Data Corporation (IDC) has said that IT spending in Indonesia would top $15.8 billion in 2013, with shipments of desktops and notebooks topping 5.5 million units, which would be up from 5.2 million units in 2012.
Agus said that notebooks were the firm’s best performing product line, followed by servers.
“Large enterprises and SMEs contribute equally to our server business. SMEs win on volume, while large enterprises are good on the value side.”
Finance firms and telecommunications operators were the firm’s biggest server customers, he added.
Agus said that SMI wanted to expand its brand portfolio in 2013 after introducing 15 new brands last year, declining to provide details.
He hinted that the firm would continue developing the tablet computer and smartphones segment — a product line it started to delve in last year — by introducing a new device brand to its product line in May.
