politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Panda Nababan, has said two of the children of late People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Taufiq Kiemas -- Mohammad Prananda Prabowo and Puan Maharani Nakshatra Kusyala ' were suitable to replace their father as a central figure in the party.
'I think all of his three children are suitable. But in the field of politics, there are Nanan [Prananda] and Puan since they have been raised to enter the political world,' said Panda after attending Taufiq's funeral in Kalibata Heroes Cemetery in South Jakarta, on Sunday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
Currently, Puan serves as a member of the Commission I which oversees defense, foreign affairs and information at the House of Representatives. She is also the PDI-P faction leader at the House.
Unlike his younger sister, Prananda, usually referred to as Nanan, has rarely been in the public eye. He has spent most of his time either accompanying his mother, former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, or writing various articles on the ideas of Bung Karno.
Nanan appeared briefly in public when he was one of the new PDI-P leaders who participated in the party's third congress in Bali, in 2010.
It seems that Nanan, who is widely known for his discreet manner, prefers to work behind the scenes.
Whoever would replace Taufiq Kiemas, Panda said, "The political capacity of both of Taufiq's children should not be questioned."
Taufiq died aged 70 in Singapore at 7:05 p.m. local time on Saturday.
Mohammad Prananda Prabowo and Mohammad Rizki Pratama are Megawati's children from her marriage to the late Surindro Suprijarso. Puan Maharani Nakshatra Kusyala is the only child of Megawati from her marriage to Taufiq Kiemas. (fan/ebf)
