A

t least three people were killed and 27 others injured in a stampede at a wedding celebration for the Garut deputy regent and a son of West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi, which was open to the public.

The deadly incident took place on Friday in the public square of Garut, West Java, where the party, or pesta rakyat (public party) was held to celebrate the wedding of Dedi’s eldest son Maula Akbar Mulyadi and deputy regent Putri Karlina. The couple tied the knot on Thursday.

People reportedly descended on the venue before the party started at 1 p.m. on Friday. Videos circulating on social media showed people being crushed and trampled on as they tried to enter the square through the main gate.

While the exact number of attendees has yet to be confirmed, Maula said in an Instagram video that the couple prepared more than 5,000 meals for the event.

The stampede left three people dead, including an 8-year-old girl and a 61-year-old woman, who were rushed to hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival, according to the West Java Police.

The other victim was an officer from the Garut Police, Chief Brig. Cecep Saeful Bahri, who died at the scene after trying to save people crushed in the stampede.

At least 27 people were injured in the incident, with most of them suffering from asphyxiation and other physical trauma. Eight of them were reportedly still under intensive care in hospitals on Sunday, while 19 others received treatment as outpatients.
