Supreme Court panel of justices has granted the case review requested by Sudjiono Timan, thus freeing him from all charges. Sudjiono, a fugitive and graft convict who fled the country, was previously sentenced to 15 years in prison, fined Rp 50 million and obliged to reimburse Rp 369 billion in restitution to the state.
Justice Suhadi, the case review panel's presiding judge, confirmed on Thursday that the panel had handed out the ruling on July 31. It determined the case was a civil case and not a criminal graft case.
Emerson Yuntho of watchdog Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) questioned the Supreme Court's commitment to eradicating corruption.
'Many corruptors will follow Sudjiono's move: flee the country and seek a case review in absentia,' he said.
Sudjiono Timan was president director of state-owned company PT Bahana Pembinaan Usaha Indonesia (BPUI) from 1994 to 2001. He has been accused of disbursing hundreds of billions of rupiahs to several companies that were not qualified to receive the funds.
The disbursements allegedly inflicted more than Rp 120 billion in state losses.(dic)
