Benget Situmorang who was on trial for mutilating his wife died ahead of the court's verdict scheduled for Thursday.
The court had been adjourned until Thursday because the suspect was suffering from lung complications resulting from tuberculosis.
'At 11 p.m. Benget, who was being held at Cipinang Penitentiary died from pneumonia,' said Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto, on Tuesday as reported by kompas.com.
Guards at the prison took Benget to Pengayoman Hospital at 10:45 p.m., as he was suffering from shortness of breath, hospital head Danial Rasyid said on Tuesday.
'The doctor did not get a chance to examine him before he passed. [He] probably died on the way [to hospital],' said Danial.
Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital are conducting an autopsy and the police are waiting on the man's medical history.
'If it [pneumonia] features in his medical history, we won't investigate further,' Rikwanto said.
In March, Benget and his alleged mistress, Tini, killed Darna Sri Astuti, Benget's wife at his house. He then mutilated her and scattered her body pieces along the Cikampek toll road.
Tini was sentenced to 14-years imprisonment for being an accomplice.
