head of a two-day nationwide strike, slated for Oct. 31 to Nov. 1, dozens of Makassar Industrial State (KIMA) workers on Wednesday, announced they would participate.
They also asked union representatives to disseminate the plan to all the companies on the industrial estate.
'Tomorrow [Thursday] is the peak of our action. We, the workers in Makassar, will participate in the nationwide strike to fight for our demands,' said Eros from the Confederation of Indonesian Workers Associations on Wednesday.
He said that based on studies, the 2014 provincial, municipality and regency level-minimum wage should be raised by 50 percent because the prices of commodities, in particular staple foods, had drastically increased following the recent fuel price hike.
Eros said that ideally, South Sulawesi's minimum wage should be Rp 2.1 million (US$186.9) per month and Rp 2.2 million for Makassar city.
'This is the minimum standard but it should be much higher so that they can have a comfortable life,' said Eros.
On Thursday, workers in Makassar will rally at three locations: the South Sulawesi governor and Legislative Council offices and under the Makassar overpass.
The South Sulawesi Police are prepared to safeguard the strike, at least 3,000 police and military personnel will be dispatched. (ebf)
