ights group the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) has urged the National Police (Polri) to evaluate the competency of its personnel to possess firearms in the wake of a recent shooting of a civilian by a member of the police force.
'We urge the National Police chief to conduct regular audits and security reviews in all its units where personnel possess firearms,' said Kontras coordinator Haris Azhar on Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said such monitoring was crucial to make sure that firearms were used professionally and proportionally and that human rights abuses were avoided.
Bachrudin, a security guard in Seribu Ruko in Galaxy complex, West Cengkareng, was allegedly shot to death on Oct.5 by a member of the Kelapa Dua Mobile Brigade (Brimob).
Based on accounts from several witnesses interviewed by Kontras at the crime scene, the alleged perpetrator had often visited the Seribu Ruko area and intimidated security guards and vendors by showing off his gun.
Kontras urged the Jakarta Police chief to take action against the Brimob member commensurate to the crime.
'The shooting reflected the weakness of monitoring in the National Police, particularly in the Brimob Kelapa Dua, which is directly responsible for the actions of the perpetrator,' said Haris.
National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Ronny F. Sompie said the National Police would review licensed firearm holders in the institution. (ebf)
