After a decade of singing, singer Astrid Sartiasari is entering a new phase in life.
The 31-year-old spoke of Alec Djuara Djoewarsa, her 20-month-old son with husband Arlan Jumarwan Djoewarsa adoringly. The couple was married in November 2011.
'Having a son is like falling in love all over again,' shared Astrid on the sidelines of her third album release, Terpukau (Enchanted), in Jakarta recently.
'I mean, one time he fell, and I felt like I was going to die ' I know I'm exaggerating. I was so worried that he was hurt. Now I know how it feels to be a mother,' said the singer, who is simply known as
Astrid.
During the interview, Astrid could not help but throw loving looks and laughs at Alec, who was in the arms of her husband.
Expressing her endless love to her son, Astrid and her husband wrote a song for their loved one.
'It's a lullaby for Alec ' we wrote it when I was carrying him. The song, 'Lagu untuk Anakku' [A Song for My Child], was made because I had promised myself that one day I would make a song for my child, and it came true in my third album.'
Born and bred in Surabaya, East Java, Astrid, developed her vocal skills by participating in various local competitions.
After school, Astrid perfected her performance skills by showcasing her talents in her hometown's Colors Cafe. Impressed with her abilities, the cafe's management then passed Astrid's demo onto Sony Music.
As a pop singer, Astrid is known for her unique vocal timbre, which sometimes reminds us of Bjork's vocal styling.
'Ratu Cahaya' (Queen of Light), a track off the original soundtrack of horror film Tusuk Jelangkung (Jelangkung's Pierce), marked Astrid's dive into the Indonesian music industry.
With fresh sounds and vocal arrangements, Astrid's first single was a serious hit.
Astrid seemed to have luck on her side as her songs continued to make it onto film soundtracks while she continued to produce pop tracks, including a cover of Vina Panduwinata's 'Di Dadaku Ada Kamu' (I've Got You in My Heart) and 'Cinta' (Love) for the film Vina Bilang Cinta (Vina Says Love).
In 2005, Astrid released her self-titled debut album that offered dark pop as reflected in 'Cinta Itu' (Love Is), 'Cahaya Cinta' (Light of Love) and 'Perpisahan' (Separation). The tracks were also part of the original soundtrack of the thriller Mirror.
She came up with more works, from the upbeat single 'Jadikan Aku Yang Kedua' (Let Me Be Your Second Lover) and 'Merpati Putih' (White Dove) by late veteran musician Chrisye for the film Badai Pasti Berlalu (Storm Shall Pass).
Her second album came in 2010, titled Lihat Aku Sekarang (Look At Me Now), which was a big success. Her album track 'Tentang Rasa' (About Feeling) received 10 million downloads in ring tone format.
Within a decade, Astrid decided to release her third album ' a sweet result of hard work as she had to juggle motherhood with hunting down good material for the album.
'It's been 10 years, but it feels like it was just yesterday. I realize that 10 years of building a career isn't a short time, and I truly remember that it hasn't been a smooth ride at all,' said Astrid with grateful.
Cherishing everything in her life, Astrid said that her transition had greatly influenced her new album.
'There are more ballads on my new album. I don't know, maybe it has something to do with me being a mother. The lyrics are also more mature compared to my previous albums,' said Astrid, referring to her funky-flavored second album.
'However, I still have a few upbeat songs [on the new album], because having a child doesn't mean we can't have some fun, right?' she laughed.
Astrid admitted that releasing singles, taking off-air and on-air jobs as well as getting married and having a child had delayed her from making more full-length albums.
