The officials apprehended the suspects on Friday, shortly before they were due to catch a ferry bound for Johor Bahru, Malaysia, based on information provided by the National Police's Criminal Investigations Directorate (Bareskrim).

'€œWe have arrested six Malaysians for cyber crime in Indonesia. Five of them carried out the crimes while the other suspect assisted them. They were caught shortly before returning to their home country,'€ Batam Immigration chief Yudi Kurniadi told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

The office'€™s investigative head, Heru Widjanarko, said his department had been instructed to arrest five Malaysian citizens who were allegedly involved in computer-assisted fraud against 34 banks, three of which are in Indonesia.

The suspects are Khor Chee Sean, Lee Chee Kheng, Ooi Choo Aun, Ong Lung Win, and Teo Chen Peng, while their accomplice has been identified as Saw Hong Woo.

"We were instructed to arrest five people but during the operation, we discovered six people preparing to depart [for Johor Bahru]. We arrested them all and have handed them over to the National Police," Widjanarko said.

During the arrests, the immigration officials confiscated an iPad, 24 ATM cards, a cell phone SIM card, 11 cell phones and cash totaling Rp 1.6 billion in various denominations, including US dollars, Singapore dollars, Malaysian ringgit and Thai baht.

"They attempted to bribe us by offering us money but we refused it," he added. (put/ebf)
