ozens of decorated boats and lanterns became the highlights of the Banjir Kanal Barat (West Flood Canal) Festival, which was held by the Semarang city administration on Friday and Saturday.
Semarang Mayor Hendrar Prihadi said the festival was aimed at raising people's awareness to keep the canal and environment clean.
This is the first festival of its kind after the city administration underwent a normalization project along the 9.3-kilometer canal from 2009 to 2012. The normalization was carried out to prevent flooding that often hit areas along the canal.
In 1990, rain caused the canal to overflow and claimed 47 lives.
Hendrar hoped a cleaner West Flood Canal would become a potential tourist destination in the city. 'Therefore, I hope all residents keep the canal clean,' he went on.
Meanwhile, head of the Pemali Juwana River Area Agency (BBWS), Iman Santoso, said the normalization of the West Flood Canal was part of a project on flood prevention in the city that also included the building of Jatibarang Dam and the rehabilitation of Simongan Dam.
