ormer Diponegoro University (Undip) rector and humanist Eko Budihardjo passed away at Kariadi Hospital in Semarang, Central Java, on Tuesday at around 9:30 p.m. local time. He was 70 years old.
His body was brought to his home at Jl. Telaga Bodas Raya I, No. 4, in Semarang, and was later brought to the Undip auditorium so people could pay their final respects on Wednesday noon.
'Pak Eko was a good person. His was well known among artists despite having been involved in the engineering field,' Muslim cleric Mustofa Bisri, or Gus Mus, said in his speech on Wednesday.
Undip Rector Sudharto P. Hadi said he had not expected Eko to pass so soon.
'When he was ill and hospitalized at Elisabeth Hospital, I paid him a visit. He even congratulated me for being the moderator in the presidential debate,' he said.
Eko was known as a critical humanist. Every time he was asked to give a speech in an event, he always recited a poem, which he usually created spontaneously.
Eko wrote 111 works on city planning and scrutinized urban problems.
In one of the writings he said, 'A city would be more beautiful if the faces of officials appeared less on the roads.'
