AKARTA: Indonesian students won a gold medal at the 3rd Asia-Pacific Conference of Young Scientists (APCYS) organized by the National Academy for Educational Research in Taiwan.

Monika Raharti, from the Center for Young Scientists (CYS) at Surya University in Tangerang said that nine students who participated at the conference between Aug. 18 and Aug. 22 also pocketed two silver medals, two bronze medals and three special awards.

'We hope the winners will become Indonesian researchers and that their achievements can motivate other scientists,' Monika said in Tangerang, Banten, west of Jakarta, on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.

She said that the students brought research in various fields to the Taiwan conference, such as in physics, mathematics, computer science, environmental science, and life sciences.

The gold medalists are Adinda Alifiansi Candra Dewi and Theresiana with their research centering on the use of moringa seeds to purify water.

APCYS is a special conference on research and scientific paper presentations for junior and high school students across the Asia-Pacific region.

It is aimed at motivating teenagers to learn and carry out scientific research.

Monika said the students were selected from the local to national levels and then coached by various mentors from different universities and APCYS alumni.

In April 2014, these students won medals at the International Conference of Young Scientists (ICYS) in Serbia, she continued.
