akarta Parks and Cemetery Agency head Nandar Sunandar said that next year the capital city would have an additional 40 hectares of land that would be used to establish urban gardens.
He said that the additional land would be earmarked for implementing the city's green program.
'We have proposed 50 hectares of land, which would include 40 hectares for city gardens and 10 hectares for cemeteries. We hope that the City Council [DPRD] will approve our proposal,' he said on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said that out of the 40 hectares, 10 hectares would be in West Jakarta, 10 in East Jakarta, 10 in South Jakarta and 10 in North Jakarta. However, the administration would not establish any new green gardens in Central Jakarta.
'We hope that our proposal can be approved as soon as possible. If it is implemented, the green spaces would decrease air pollution and make Jakarta more healthy and beautiful,' he said. (alz)
