The City Police will deploy around 1,000 personnel to safeguard the city's second Jakarta Marathon on Sunday.

Jakarta Traffic Police operational unit head Adj. Sr. Comr. Budiyanto told The Jakarta Post on Thursday that several roads in the city would be closed in order to accommodate the marathon's route from the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta to Gatot Subroto through Old Town, Jl. Thamrin and Jl. Sudirman and back to Monas.

'We will open and close the roads one hour before and after the usual Car Free Day schedule. This means they will be closed from around 4 a.m. to 12 p.m.,' he said over the phone.

Budiyanto also said that alternative routes were currently still being discussed and would be finalized by Friday.

According to Jakarta Sports Agency head Ratiyono, 14,120 runners had registered to join the race. Elite runners from Kenya, Japan, Ethiopia and Thailand have confirmed their participation.
