eavy rain pouring on Semarang and its surrounding areas has hit power supplies, leaving thousands of residents without electricity from 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The power outage was caused by disruption of voltage transformers in Ungaran, Semarang regency, Central Java, and affected activities in schools, offices and business centers in the area.

'€œAn hours-long power outage hit several areas in Central Java. Several of our voltage transformers in Ungaran experienced disruption caused by the bad weather,'€ the deputy spokesperson of state-owned electricity company PT PLN'€™s regional division office for Central Java and Yogyakarta, Supriyono, said in Semarang on Tuesday.

The electricity disruption was first revealed to have occurred in the Inter Bus Transformer (IBT) 3 at Ungaran electrical relay station. Disruption was later found to have also occurred at coal-fired power plant (PLTU) Rembang Unit 1 and 2 and PLTU Pacitan, leading to power outages in a number of areas in Central Java.

In Semarang, 12 out of 15 electrical relay stations suffered disruptions. Some areas in cities across Central Java, including Klaten, Kudus, Pati, Salatiga and Surakarta, suffered power blackouts.

'€œWe are striving to resolve the disruption so that power supplies in the province can return to normal immediately. We apologize to all residents hit by the power outages. It is beyond our control, it is the fault of the bad weather,'€ said Supriyono. (ebf)(+++)
