President Prabowo Subianto is in Bangkok on Monday for an official visit, as he reconvenes with Thailand’s leaders to strengthen bilateral ties ahead of his first ASEAN summit in Malaysia and amid regional concerns over the ongoing tariff war started by the United States.

Arriving in Bangkok on Saturday night, Prabowo will start his official agenda on Monday morning with a visit to Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn at the Bangkok Royal Palace, before discussing bilateral ties with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra at her office.
“[The President and the PM] will witness the signing of several MoUs [memorandums of understanding] that reflect their commitment to expanding bilateral partnership,” the Presidential Secretariat said in a statement on Sunday night.
Protocol, press and media deputy Yusuf Permana did not elaborate further, but said that Prabowo would be accompanied by Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Foreign Minister Sugiono.
According to the Thai government, the bilateral meeting is expected to cover a wide range of topics, including security cooperation, trade and investment, food security, tourism, education, people-to-people relations and regional cooperation.
Prabowo’s trip marks the first official visit from an Indonesian president to Bangkok in 20 years, Thai government spokesperson Jirayu Houngsub said in a statement.
“During the visit, both leaders will announce the elevation of relations to strategic partnership, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Indonesia this year,” Jirayu said.
