he management of Husein Sastranegara International Airport in Bandung, West Java, will close one day ahead of the Asian-African Conference Commemoration (AACC) event scheduled for later this week.
Airport operator PT Angkasa Pura (AP) II general manager Yayan Hendrayani said the airport's closure would take place starting at 3 p.m. local time on Thursday and last through 5 p.m. on Friday.
'Up to now, we are still awaiting confirmation on which leaders will arrive using private jets. We have allocated slots for only eight airplanes,' Yayan said in Bandung on Monday.
The official further said airplanes carrying heads of states and governments would begin arriving at Husein Sastranegara Airport on Thursday morning.
'Four flights have been scheduled for Thursday morning. The first is scheduled for 7:15 a.m. local time and each arrival be spaced in intervals of 15 minutes,' said Yayan.
Yayan declined to elaborate on potential losses the airport could incur from the closure, except to say that the airport served around 7,000 passengers each day.
'Every day, around 3,500 passengers depart from Bandung to various destinations both in Indonesia and abroad,' he said.
Yayan said AP II informed all airline companies operating in the airport about the closure a last week.
'All companies have moved their flights forward or backward. They have also shifted their flight routes to Soekarno-Hatta Airport,' he said.
Separately, Bandung Mayor Ridwan Kamil asked all residents to respect security procedures concerning the AACC events in Bandung that will be centered on the Merdeka Building on Friday.
'People can welcome delegations and guests by standing along the streets from Husein Sastranegara Airport to Jl. Asia Afrika. However, they cannot enter Jl. Asia Afrika for security reasons," he said after a preparation meeting.
West Java Police deputy chief Brig. Gen. M. Taufik said the police would temporarily halt the issuance of permit letters for public rallies.
'We urge people not to hold any public rallies from April 21 to 25. Otherwise, we will be forced to disperse them,' he said.
Military Region Command (Kodam) III/Siliwangi commander Maj. Gen. Dedi Kusnadi Thamim said the command had dispatched around 4,200 personnel to help police guard the conference. (ebf)(++++)
