The Transportation Ministry confirmed on Sunday that a Trigana Air had lost contact with air traffic control.
The plane had 54 passengers and crew on board, an Indonesian transportation official said.
The Transportation Ministry's head of public communications, Julius Andravida Barata, said the Trigana aircraft had lost contact with air traffic control at 2:55 p.m. during a flight from Jayapura to Oksibil on Sunday.
'The Trigana Air PK-YRN aircraft, flight number IL 267, has not landed in Oksibil. Contact with it has been lost, according to the ATC Tower in Oksibil,' he said as quoted by Antara in Jakarta on Sunday.
Barata said the aircraft was piloted by Capt.Hasanudin. There were five crew members, including the pilot, and 49 passengers on board.
Authorities said a search and rescue team had been deployed. (ebf)
