akarta Governor Basuki 'Ahok' Tjahaja Purnama has said that his administration is now focusing on the revitalization of the Ciliwung River near the flood-prone Kampung Pulo area in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, following the relocation of its residents.
'We have finally managed to relocate Kampung Pulo's residents. The next step will be to implement the Ciliwung normalization program,' said Ahok at City Hall on Tuesday.
He said that the administration will dredge and widen the river and build an inspection road in the area where the houses once stood.
'Our target is to make Kampung Pulo a flood free area. For that we will widen the river and build an inspection road as well as a reservoir,' Ahok explained as quoted by Antara news agency.
He also said that there was a plan to build apartments in Kampung Pulo. But the apartments can only be implemented after all the residents are relocated.
'One thing for sure is that we need to make sure that there are no more houses and other buildings along both of Ciliwung's riverbanks. Then the river revitalization project and the new housing project will follow through right after,' said Ahok.
After the relocation of all residents, the city government in cooperation with the central government will start the flood mitigation project by widening Ciliwung River to a width of 20 to 50 meters.
'Heritage buildings in Kampung Pulo, like an old building with Dutch architecture, will still be conserved or revamped as a tourist attraction. We can even equip the area with special tourism transportation along the Ciliwung River,' said Ahok. (nov/bbn)
