T

he police in Surabaya, East Java, have detained two Chinese nationals for allegedly operating a gold scam in the country'€™s second-largest city.

The suspects, identified as Yuhua Zhong, 36, and Yunsheng Zhang, 37, were arrested on Friday in a shopping mall in Surabaya as they were trying to sell fake Chinese antiquities to a local resident, according to Surabaya Metro Police'€™s criminal investigation unit head Adj. Sr. Comr. Takdir Mattanete.

Takdir said the suspects were passing themselves off as exploration company workers to their victims. They offered their victims Chinese antiquities that they claimed were made of gold, such as coins and sculptures, for up to Rp 350 million (US$25,364) in bulk.

'€œThey asked to be paid in cash,'€ Takdir said, as quoted by tribunnews.com on Saturday. During questioning, the two suspects revealed that they had been working with a dozen other people in the scam.
