ovelist Eka Kurniawan’s Seperti Dendam, Rindu Harus Dibayar Tuntas (Love and Vengeance) will be adapted into film, Barcelona-based literary and film agency Pontas has announced.
Pontas said in a statement published on Thursday that the film rights to adapt the novel into a feature film had been acquired by Jakarta-based company Palari Films.
“The film will be produced by Muhammad Zaidy and Meike Taurisia,” the statement said.
Award-winning filmmaker Edwin will direct and write the script, with Eka’s help in scriptwriting.
Eka is a rising star in the Indonesian literary world. His debut novel, Cantik Itu Luka (Beauty is a Wound), was first published in English last year.
He also rose to prominence earlier this year after he was longlisted for the 2016 International Man Booker Prize. His novels have received positive reviews from top media, including the New York Times and The Guardian.
Love and Vengeance tells the story of West Java’s urban underworld. The English language rights of the novel have been acquired by New Directions (US & Canada), Pushkin Press (UK & Commonwealth) and Text Publishing (Australia & NZ).
