he government has safely evacuated more than 100 Indonesian citizens from Iran and Israel amid heightened tensions and military attacks that keep intensifying since a surprise assault by Israel last week.
The Foreign Ministry recorded 97 people were evacuated from Iran. The entourage comprised 93 Indonesian citizens, three embassy staffers and an Iranian national married to an Indonesian.
They crossed the Iranian border with Azerbaijan and are resting in Baku, as of Saturday.
“Alhamdulillah [Praise be to God], the first phase of evacuation has gone well,” Foreign Minister Sugiono said on Saturday.
“The journey took around 16 hours and proceeded relatively smoothly, despite the border area being more crowded than usual,” he said.
According to the ministry’s latest record, there are 386 Indonesian citizens living in Iran. Most of them are students residing in the city of Qom, some 140 kilometers south of the Iranian capital of Tehran.
While Israel has not targeted Qom in the past week, local media reported that some missile strikes hit the main road connecting the city with the capital.
