T

here could be unscrupulous people operating in the Jakarta's Parks and Cemeteries Agency as indicated by irregularities found by the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK), Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said on Tuesday.

In the report on the Jakarta administration’s 2015 financial report, which was graded reasonable with exceptions, the BPK found irregularities in the opening of four bank accounts on behalf of the North, West, South and East Jakarta offices of the Parks and Cemeteries Agency. The opening of the four Bank DKI accounts was not endorsed by the governor, as required by law, according to BPK findings.

"We are investigating the matter. If embezzlement is found, we will report it to police. It could have been orchestrated by a ‘mafia’ group," he told journalists at City Hall on Tuesday.

If an internal investigation discovers graft was involved, the city administration will report the matter to the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

He said suspected the irregularities involved a group of people who paid cash for land so that the transactions could not be traced. The new bank accounts could also be used for illegal purposes regarding land acquisition.

The city administration requires all land acquisition payments to be handled by bank transfer, not through cash payments, Ahok said. He had instructed city officials to transfer funds to land owners' accounts for valid evidence as well as to prevent embezzlement. However, he claimed that not all his subordinates abided by the requirement. (rin)
