Mobile power plants to cover 2,000 MW gap: PLN

tate electricity firm PLN is hoping to build gas-based mobile power plants (MPP) to cover an electricity gap of up to 2,000 megawatts (MW) by the end of 2018, mainly in Sumatra and Kalimantan.
After an initial MPP project in Mempawah, West Kalimantan, was inaugurated by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on June 2, six MPPs are set to follow in Bangka (2x25 MW), Belitung (1x25 MW), Medan (3x25 MW), Nias (1x25 MW), Riau (3x25 MW) and Lampung (4x25 MW).
“The projects are worth Rp 7 trillion [US$528 million] in total and we are targeting 2,000 MW from the MPP in 2017-2018," PLN president director Sofyan Basir said on Wednesday in Jakarta.
For Java, PLN will optimize micro hydropower plants despite criticism from Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Rizal Ramli that the feed-in tariff was too high, at over Rp 2,000 per kilowatt hour.
Echoing Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Sudirman Said’s response, Sofyan argued that the need for micro hydropower was beyond profit and loss as it would only contribute 78 MW — 0.125 percent — to the total electricity projects.
“It is not only about financial matters, because the need for renewable energy in Java is very high,” Sofyan said. (ags)
