A la Mode: Omega Globemaster Striving for Precision

OMEGA UNVEILS THE GLOBEMASTER, THE WORLD’S FIRST ‘MASTER CHRONOMETER ‘

With over a century craftsmanship under its belt, Omega has unveiled its Globemaster series, setting new standards for accuracy and performance.

Released during last year’s Baselworld watch show in Switzerland, and inspired by the brand’s venerable Constellation series; the Globemaster is the first timepiece from Omega certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS).

METAS is the Swiss federal center of competence for measurement and measuring equipment and procedures. The certification is a guarantee of the Globemaster’s precision and quality.

With a simple and captivating design, the Globemaster is fit for any occasion. The timepiece is available in a range of materials including 18K Sedna gold, 18K yellow gold and stainless steel.

A design feature that defines the Globemaster is its dial, done in a style that collectors have long referred to as a pie-pan dial.

No less important is the fluted bezel, an element that has decorated several famous Constellation watches, and which is made out of tungsten carbide.

The stainless steel 39 mm Globemaster also incorporates design elements of Constellation watches made in the 1950s and the 1960s.

The central hour, minute and second hands match the indexes, all of which are coated in Super-LumiNova. There is also a date indication at 6 o’clock on the dial.

Omega’s history is also reflected on the Globemaster’s caseback, where a medallion has been stamped with an image of the observatory where chronometer competitions took place during famous trials in the 1940s and 1950s. Eight stars in the sky above the observatory symbolize the eight most important precision records that Omega has set.

The stars also signify the eight METAS-certified criteria that a timepiece and its movement must pass in order to receive Master Chronometer status.

ANNUAL CALENDAR

The Globemaster Annual Calendar, debuting at Baselworld 2016, is an evolutionary step, with a case diameter increased from 39mm to 41 mm. The size allows for greater visibility of the pie-pan dial, which is presented in a new lustrous shade of grey. The model also reintroduces classic design elements of some vintage Constellation models.

The Annual Calendar boasts a new movement that features each month of the year in the 12 facets of the pie-pan dial. There is a blued hand that points toward the current month, which instantly jumps at month’s end.

The case remains stainless steel and, similar to the previous series, the polished fluted bezel is made from scratch-proof tungsten carbide.

NEW STANDARDS

In 2014, Omega and METAS announced a new certification process that would become active in the following year. The Globemaster was the first watch that was tested and passed the process.

In addition to measuring the performance of the watch in daily conditions, the intensive 10-day process ensured that the watch would function properly when exposed to strong magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss.

Before the watch was exposed to the magnetic field and its performance measured according to the criteria approved by METAS, the movement passed the tests established by the Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), which certifies the accuracy and precision of wristwatches made in Switzerland.

For the Globemaster timepiece, Omega is doubling the certification with a new METAS test to ensure the watch meets the brand’s level of precision.

While any watchmaker can submit its watches for METAS-approved tests to receive Master Chronometer standing; until today, Omega is still the only brand with such certification.
