engkulu Police chief Brig. Gen. M. Ghufron said 200 officers have been deployed to safeguard a coal mining site belonging to PT Citra Buana Selaras in Central Bengkulu following rioting on Saturday that involved locals. Nine locals suffered gunshot wounds and a police officer was wounded by a machete.
"The 200 officers will be at the scene for a week to prevent unwanted incidents from repeating,” Ghufron said as quoted by kompas.com on Sunday.
Police are currently investigating the reasons behind the violence that broke out when locals rallied to protest the company’s plans to build an underground mine.
Separately, Nurdin, who leads the local protesters, insisted that the residents would continue their opposition to the project. ”We don’t want to inherit land whose ground is porous because of underground mining.”
In the future, he added, the protesters would avoid getting involved in another riot. (dmr)
