akarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has given his assurances that there will be no raids on eateries and shops in the capital during Ramadhan.
His statement came following a public outcry after the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) in neighboring Serang, Banten, raided a food stall belonging to middle-aged woman Saeni, who had served customers at midday during the fasting month.
“No shops will be closed during the fasting month,” Ahok said at City Hall on Monday, stressing that the capital did not have regulations on the closure of eateries or shops during Ramadhan.
Serang Satpol PP personnel raided Saeni’s food stall based on a regulation prohibiting eateries from serving customers during the day throughout the fasting month. Muslims are required to fast from dawn until dusk.
Ahok said he hoped Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo would revoke the intolerant decree.
Footage of the raid went viral on social media on Friday and led to a donation drive for Saeni, which had collected more than Rp 176 million (US$13,200) as of Sunday night. (cal)
