akarta’s General Election Commission (KPU Jakarta) has said it will verify photocopies of identity cards submitted in support of independent candidates between Aug. 21 and Sept. 3.

Based on a newly approved law on regional elections, the election commission has to carry out a factual verification of every photocopied ID card submitted by voters in support of independent candidates.

“We will verify all of them by conducting a door-to-door census in accordance with the list of names reported to us,” commission chairman Sumarno said at City Hall on Wednesday.

Currently, only Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama has declared his intention to run as an independent candidate. His volunteer support group Teman Ahok (Friends of Ahok) has reportedly collected more than 950,000 ID copies, far exceeding the minimum 532,000 required by law.

“Based on the verification, there might be some invalid IDs, either because the person has died or moved to another place,” said Sumarsono.

According to Sumarno, each polling committee staff member should verify 40 to 50 ID cards per day. Therefore, the KPU was preparing some 800 personnel of polling committees from 267 subdistricts across the capital, he added.

“We will check the background of the personnel to make sure they do not have any political interests or come from another candidate’s campaign team,” Sumarno said. (vps/bbn)
