T

he police are poised to net more suspects involved in a  soccer riot last Friday by monitoring social media, after detaining six members of Jakarta’s Persija soccer fan club, Jakmania, through the strategy.

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Cmr. Awi Setiyono said the institution had detained six people who had taken selfies with the badly injured Brig. Hanafi and circulated the images.

“We have arrested six people who took selfies with the victim and uploaded their photos onto their Facebook page. They have met the categories of committing hate speech. It is not easy to construct the case, thus we are starting with a hate speech indictment,” he said in Jakarta on Monday.

The six people range from 16 to 20 years old. One suspect, identified as AF, is 16 years old, classifying as a child according to the law. Thus, the police did not detain him but only obliged him to do a compulsory report.

Meanwhile, one person was named a suspect for allegedly attacking a police officer. The police are investigating three more people identified as A., K., and I. who were allegedly involved in the police attack.

Six police officers sustained serious injuries, with one of them in critical condition after Jakmania members sparked a riot after South Sumatra’s Sriwijaya FC scored a goal against their beloved team at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Jakarta. (ags)
