omen’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Yohana Yembise said on Monday that she would coordinate with the Transportation Ministry to provide better facilities for Indonesian people, especially for women and children, traveling on public transportation.

Speaking on the sidelines of an impromptu inspection to monitor the handling of Idul Fitri homebound travelers at the Pulogadung bus terminal in East Jakarta, Monday, she said friendlier facilities for women and children must be provided in public spaces, including at the terminal although it already had a non-permanent room for breastfeeding.

“I will send a letter to the Transportation Ministry to provide an exclusive air-conditioned waiting room for parents and their children, especially for those with physical disabilities,” Yohana said after handing over dozens of packages containing snacks and merchandise for parents who were traveling with their children.

Dozens of parents waiting for buses to convey them to their hometowns, were sitting on the sidewalks outside the Pulogadung terminal because it did not provide passengers with waiting rooms.

A female passenger, Aziz, complained that the station really made her feel uncomfortable, especially for her 10-year-old daughter who suffered communications problems and was unable to walk.

"We have been waiting for more than two hours here because the bus is not yet on schedule. The station is uncomfortable and dirty. It also doesn’t provide passengers with decent facilities such as wheelchairs for people with disabilities who need special treatment,” Aziz said, adding that she and her family members were set to make a 24-hour journey from Jakarta to her hometown in Madura, East Java.
