ounterterrorism authorities have identified Islamic State (IS) militant group supporter Nur Rohman, 30, as the suicide bomber who sacrificed himself at the entrance way of the Surakarta Police headquarters in Surakarta, Central Java, early this morning.

A source at the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) revealed that Nur had been a member of a homegrown IS cell led by Arief Hidayatullah, alias Abu Musab. Arief was detained by police in December last year for allegedly plotting a New Year's Eve attack.

"Nur Rohman escaped arrest during the December raids," said the BNPT spokesperson.

Nur is suspected by counterterrorism authorities to have had several explosives in his possession when he fled the scene of the December 2015 police raids.

One of the bombs was believed to have been used in today's attack. The attack, carried out on the eve of Idul Fitri, injured a policeman and resulted in the death of the perpetrator, Nur. The attack claimed no other casualties.

Based on the scanned copy of his ID, obtained by The Jakarta Post on Tuesday, Nur Rohman is a native of Surakarta, Central Java. Surakarta is also home to Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, the notorious Islamic spiritual leader who has been linked to militant Sunni Islamist organization Al-Qaeda, founded in 1988 by Osama bin Laden. (dan)
