T

housands of residents were queuing to get hold of packages of staple food distributed by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo as an Idul Fitri gift in his hometown of Surakarta, Central Java, on Friday.

The packages were handed out to about 2,200 residents from five subdistricts—Sumber, Banyuanyar, Kadipiro, Nusukan and Gilingan—at Graha Saba Buana, a venue owned by the president’s family.

Heads of neighborhood units of each subdistrict distributed coupons to the residents that could be exchanged for the packages.

“I was queuing since 7 a.m. and got the package at 10:30. Pak Jokowi himself distributed the bundles. I am so happy,” said Warsini, 57, a resident of Sumber.

Jokowi is accustomed to distributing food packages to residents when visiting regions of the country, especially during Ramadhan. Just days before Idul Fitri, he distributed packages to residents in Bogor, West Java, and Padang, West Sumatra.

In Surakarta, an Idul Fitri package from Jokowi consists of 2.5 kilograms of rice, a box of tea, one kilogram of sugar, one liter of cooking oil and Rp 100,000 in cash.

After distributing the packages, Jokowi headed to the headquarters of the Army's Special Forces (Kopassus) Group 2, based in Kandang Menjangan, Sukoharjo, to perform Friday prayer.

Jokowi is slated to meet police and military personnel in Surakarta after the prayer. (wit)
