he Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) central executive board may assign Surabaya mayor Tri Rismaharini to run as its Jakarta gubernatorial candidate next year if the party believes she is the best candidate, a party politician says.

PDI-P Jakarta gubernatorial candidate recruitment team head Gembong Warsono said on Friday that the party was considering her grassroots support through various groups including Risma’s Warriors (Laris), Risma’s Troops (Paris), Tanah Merah with Risma (Tameris) and Jakarta Love Risma (Jaklovers).

“The case is simple. The party can deliver assignment letters to Risma as a party member if the party believes that she is needed in the capital,” Gembong said at City Council on Friday.

He believed Risma would not reject her appointment as a Jakarta gubernatorial candidate although she has said that she still wanted to focus on her duties as Surabaya mayor.

Gembong said that so far no PDI-P member had rejected a party assignment.

The PDI-P has announced that it has whittled its list of potential gubernatorial candidates down to six. However, their names have not been disclosed to the public. Besides Risma, Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat and politician Boy Sadikin are among potential candidates from the largest party in the city. (bbn)
