espite Central Jakarta winning an Adipura Kirana award for being one of the most attractive cities in Indonesia, Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama has stated that the city is not worthy of the award.

“I’m ashamed to get an Adipura award because our streets are still dirty,” Ahok said at City Hall on Monday.

The central government awards provinces, cities or regencies with Adipura awards for their involvement and improvement in environmental issues. Among several Adipura awards, Central Jakarta was awarded a 2016 Adipura Kirana award on Friday with 38 other cities for their efforts to drive economic growth through environment management-based trade, tourism and investment.

Ahok congratulated Central Jakarta Mayor Manggara Pardede but asked him not to be proud of the award, noting that Jakarta still had a lot of work to do with respect to the environment. He called for all city officials to give their best effort to keep the city clean in accordance with their oaths of office.

Meanwhile, Manggara said he aimed to improve the cleanliness of Central Jakarta, especially on main roads, revealing that he had ordered city cleaners to start cleaning main thoroughfares before 7 a.m. in the morning to give a pleasant aspect to the heart of the city. (rin)
