resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is expected to attend the closing ceremony of the Golkar Party's national leaders meeting at the Jakarta Convention Center on Thursday, when the party will officially declare its support for Jokowi in the 2019 presidential election.
Golkar will hold its national leaders meeting on Wednesday and Thursday, when the veteran party will announce its stance in front of Jokowi, Golkar secretary-general Idrus Marham said on Tuesday.
He said Vice President Jusuf Kalla and Cabinet ministers had also been invited to the closing event, kompas.com reported.
About 700 top party officials, including those on the central executive board and from regional branches, will attend the meeting. Six commissions will hold discussions to discuss several issues, such as politics and the economy.
"We want to complete our political consolidation to guarantee victory in 2019," Idrus added.
The party, which is strongly identified with the late dictator Soeharto, elected a new chairman in May, the controversial former House of Representatives speaker Setya Novanto, and officially announced it support for Jokowi's administration. (rin)
