T Agung Podomoro Land (APL) has halted an Rp 80 billion (US$6 million) project to build a parking garage for the Jakarta Police following the government’s decision to stop the reclamation of Islet G in Jakarta Bay, Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said on Tuesday.

“APL doesn’t want to continue the project because the fate of the reclamation project is uncertain,” the governor says.

In March, APL committed to constructing the parking garage within a year as part of the required “additional contribution” imposed by the Jakarta administration on developers that won reclamation projects.

The 3-hectare parking garage, which was to have eight floors and a helipad, was being built to accommodate 789 vehicles.

APL subsidiary PT Muara Wisesa Samudra won the right to develop Islet G, but the government decided to halt the islet reclamation project because of environmental concerns. The government made the decision after the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) charged APL president director Ariesman Wijaya with bribery in connection to the city’s reclamation project.

Besides building a parking garage for the police, the company also pledged to build low-cost housing and a road, which it completed. (ary)
