C

oordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan will read up a presidential regulation (perpres) on the reclamation of Benoa Bay in Bali before issuing a recommendation regarding public opinion on the project.

“There must be a reason why Pak SBY [Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono] issued the regulation. Therefore, people should reserve judgement [ on the reclamation project],” Luhut said at his office on Thursday.

According to the 2014 perpres issued by SBY, the sixth president of Indonesia, the status of Benoa Bay had been changed to that of a commercial zone from a greenbelt water conservation area.

Meanwhile, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti has extended the permit for the reclamation of Benoa Bay in reference to the perpres.

Balinese have voiced their rejection toward the reclamation plan, owing to environmental concerns. There are at least 70 sacred sites for Balinese Hindus and a sea grass area in the bay.

Luhut further said he would examine the advantages of the reclamation and ensure that the public would be informed of the development. (wnd/bbn)
