he Gerindra Party will announce its candidate for the Jakarta gubernatorial elections no later than Aug. 5, the head of the party's gubernatorial candidate recruitment team, Syarif, said on Friday.
Gerindra held a national meeting at the house of its chairman Prabowo Soebianto in Hambalang, West Java, on Friday to discuss the party's candidature in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election.
"We hope today [Friday] or no later than Aug 5, the party's central executive board will declare the candidate's name," Syarif told thejakartapost.com.
Syarif said Gerindra had communicated with political parties, except the Golkar Party, NasDem Party and Hanura Party, which have announced their support for incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama.
Meanwhile, Gerindra has named three potential candidates for the elections: businessman Sandiaga Uno, former deputy defense minister Lt. Gen. (ret) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and former law and human right minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra.
In early July, the vice chairman of Gerindra also mentioned National Narcotics Agency (BNN) chairman Budi Waseso as a possible gubernatorial candidate. (bbn)
