ational flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has claimed that Brexit, Britain’s move to leave the EU, will not affect the company’s operations in the short term.
Garuda president director M. Arif Wibowo said the company’s revenues had been calculated in US dollars so it was unlikely that the vote to leave the EU would affect its business. Moreover, currency turmoil caused by Brexit-related effects had begun to disappear, he added.
“So far, there has been no disturbance, both in terms of finance and operations, such as plane leasing. However, we are still aware of Brexit’s long-term effects,” he told thejakartapost.com at his office on Jl. Kebon Sirih, Central Jakarta, on Monday.
Arif explained that so far, Brexit had not discouraged people from buying Garuda tickets to travel to Europe. The company’s newly opened European routes to Amsterdam and London have been filled with passengers.
“Three months since we launched our Jakarta-London route on March 31, the occupancy rate has stood at around 40-50 percent although we have not yet reached peak season. For our Amsterdam route, the occupancy rate has reached 77 percent,” he said. (ebf)
