he executive board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) is still focusing on the selection of candidates for other regions and, therefore, the Jakarta gubernatorial candidate will be chosen later, a party politician has said.
PDI-P deputy chairman Djarot Saiful Hidayat, who is also Jakarta deputy governor, said the party would pay serious attention to its candidates for regional leadership positions in eastern Indonesia.
"The regional elections are not only about Jakarta. We haven't talked about the names of the candidates but the vision and mission of the regional leaders," Djarot said in Teuku Umar, Central Jakarta, on Friday.
Indonesia will hold simultaneous regional elections in 101 provinces, cities and regencies in February 2017.
Djarot said the central board had finished making recommendations for regional leader candidates in West Papua, Papua, South East Sulawesi and Sumatra.
“After finishing the eastern regions of the country, the party will start to discuss the election preparations in Java, including Jakarta,” said Djarot, who is expected to be paired with incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama in the election.
He said PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri had not talked about a Jakarta gubernatorial candidate and had only expressed her hope that the election would run smoothly. (bbn)
