ndonesia will raise issues concerning counter-terrorism, including the prevention of terrorism financing, at the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits in Vientiane in Laos this week to strengthen international cooperation against terrorism, a top minister said on Monday.
Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto, who will lead the Indonesian delegation for political and security cooperation, said discussions on counterterrorism would be based on reports from the International Meeting on Counterterrorism (IMCT) and Counterterrorism Financing (CTF) Summit, which were held in Bali last month.
"I will deliver Indonesia's achievement during the counterterrorism summit. We will also discuss counterterrorism financing," Wiranto told journalists on Monday.
Indonesia plays an important and strategic role in the ASEAN regional framework, he said, which the country would use to contribution to the ASEAN summit. During the summit, Indonesia will emphasize the importance of international intelligence cooperation as part of counterterrorism measures. Furthermore, Wiranto said he would also bring up the importance of increasing the monitoring of state borders thought to be used as access points by terrorists.
Indonesia hosted the second CTF Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali, at which delegates from 23 countries agreed on the Nusa Dua Statement to push governments to enhance international cooperation to adopt effective measures to prevent terrorism financing.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is scheduled to attend the Laos summits, held from Sept. 6 to 8, during which Indonesia will reiterate the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region for the sake of the member countries' development. (rin)
