akarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) stressed on Tuesday that his party would nominate someone from its own ranks to compete in the 2017 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election.
“The process has been completed. We have observed the political dynamics. We are sure that the PDI-P will nominate an internal candidate,” said Djarot at City Hall on Tuesday as reported by tribunnews.com.
He said the PDI-P would welcome other political parties to join with them in a coalition, despite the fact that the PDI-P has 28 seats on the City Council, which means it can nominate a candidate without forming a coalition.
The PDI-P has not yet announced its candidate for the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election, although it has hinted at supporting incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.
Djarot added that his party wanted members of the coalition to establish a long term relationship, and not to split soon after the election.
“We don’t want to repeat our experiences in other regions. During the regional elections, we had close cooperation, but some months or a year afterwards, we started to quarrel and split. This should not happen with the coalition for the Jakarta gubernatorial election,” he added.
Separately, PDI-P secretary general Hasto Kristiyanto said the party’s decision on the gubernatorial candidate had been made by party chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri. He declined, however, to reveal the name of the candidate. (bbn)
