akarta gubernatorial candidate Sandiaga Uno has claimed that political parties in the Kinship Coalition remain solid amid reports of several coalition members’ disappointment following the announcement of Mardani Ali Sera as Sandi’s deputy gubernatorial candidate.

“Thank God, we are still united. It is common if there are dynamics in politics,” Sandi said as reported by kompas.com on Monday.

Last week, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) announced it would propose Mardani for the role of deputy gubernatorial candidate. A party politician claimed that Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto had agreed with Mardani’s nomination.

But some members of the Kinship Coalition — the United Development Party (PPP) and United Awakening Party (PKB) — rejected Mardani’s nomination. A new coalition will reportedly be set up to nominate former law and human rights minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra as its gubernatorial candidate.

Sandi said he could understand the reaction from the PPP and PKB, but stressed that the nomination of Mardani was not yet final.

“The process is still ongoing. The decision will be made by leaders of the political parties who still have a strong commitment to unite in the Kinship Coalition,” said Sandi, who was nominated by Gerindra.

The Kinship Coalition was established by seven political parties — the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Gerindra, PKS, PPP, PKB, Democratic Party and National Awakening Party (PAN). However, the PDI-P later reportedly quit the coalition as it was considering supporting Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. (bbn)
