T

he government has promised financial support of Rp 15 million (US$1,142) for each family of the 23 victims of a recent flash flood and landslide in the West Java regencies of Garut and Sumedang.

Social Affairs Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa visited the two regencies on Thursday, after dispatching a team of psychologists to counsel traumatized victims following the natural disaster.

"As part of our condolences, we will distribute social aid to families of the deceased, both in Garut and Sumedang, amounting to Rp 15 million each," Khofifah said at the State Palace in Jakarta.

The flood was caused by overflowing of Cimanuk River after heavy rain on Tuesday, which also caused the landslides. The affected areas in Garut regency are Bayongbong, Garut town, Banyuresmi, Tarogong Kaler, Tarogong Kidul, Karang Pawitan and Samarang.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has sent Rp 2 billion worth of logistics and aid to the area. Meanwhile another Rp 14 billion has been prepared for the emergency response operation. (ags)
