espite the sluggish realization of tax amnesty, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has expressed optimism over the tax amnesty program, which he said had managed to make people comply and pay their taxes.
"I am still optimistic with this program. I do not talk numbers, but most importantly public trust in the government is shown. I also saw their compliance and awareness to pay the taxes. This is a very good movement," Jokowi told economists and businesspeople who attended a lunch meeting at the State Palace on Thursday.
Jokowi said as of today, tax revenues from about 90,000 tax payers reached more than Rp 33 trillion (US$2.5 billion). He also mentioned that according to research by Citibank, Indonesia's tax amnesty moved very fast with declared assets amounting to Rp 1,029 trillion.
"It has been written that this is one of the successful tax amnesty programs in the world, and this is a strategy which, according to them, [went] very well," the President said. (evi)
