P

resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is scheduled to visit Natuna, Riau Islands, on Thursday. This will be his second visit to Natuna in the last five months after he visited the area to inspect naval patrols on the border of the South China Sea on June 23.

Raja Hery Mokhrizal, the Riau Islands administration protocol and public relations bureau head, confirmed on Monday he had received information from the State Palace that Jokowi planned to visit Natuna on Oct. 6.

Hery further said Jokowi’s visit to Natuna was partly to inspect the Angkasa Yudha airborne training module. The training will be conducted above Natuna and the South China Sea, he went on to say.

On Monday morning, Indonesian Military commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo, accompanied by Army chief of staff Gen. Mulyono, Air Force chief of staff Air Marshal Agus Supriatna and several other high-ranking military officials, visited Natuna to monitor preparations for the training module held by the Air Force.

Contacted separately, Ranai Air Force Base commander Col. Nurtanio Affan refused to give details on Gatot’s visit.

Natuna Transportation Agency head Wan Siswandi said that during his visit, President Jokowi was also scheduled to inaugurate the newly expanded Ranai Airport.

“Initially, the airport’s inauguration was scheduled for Oct. 12 but the date has been moved to Oct. 6,” said Siswandi. (ebf)
